Zum Film: Am 11. September 1973 wurde in Chile der demokratisch gewählte Präsident Salvador Allende durch einen Militärputsch gestürzt. Darauf folgten Jahrzehnte von grausamer politischer und kultureller Unterdrückung. Zu den Hingerichteten zählte Jorge Peña Hen, ein Komponist und Dirigent eines renommierten Kinderorchesters. 45 Jahre später reist der kanadische Dokumentarfilmer Kerry Candaele nach Chile, um einen Film über Beethovens einzige Oper Fidelio zu drehen. In der Oper geht es um den politischen Gefangenen Florestan, der zu Unrecht in einem Kerker festgehalten wird, aber schließlich von seiner Frau Leonore gerettet wird. In Valparaiso stellt Candaele ein Orchester mit dem berühmten Ensemble Napalé, jungen Musiker:innen und Darsteller:innen zusammen, um Teile der Befreiungsoper aufzuführen. Eine Protagonistin ist María Belén Espinosa Peña, die eine Enkelin von Jorge Peña Hen und eine ausdrucksstarke Butoh-Tänzerin ist. (Butoh ist eine zeitgenössische japanische Tanztheater-Form.) Sie verkleidet sich als ein Dirigent, um ihren Großvater aus dem Gefängnis des Vergessens zu befreien.
Candaele hat eine wirbelnde, poetische, zutiefst musikalische Filmerzählung geschaffen, die auch Ludwig van Beethovens eigene Suche nach Liebe und Gerechtigkeit thematisiert. Ein Film für unsere unruhige Zeit.

On September 11, 1973, a military coup Chile deposed the democratically elected president Salvador Allende, installed General Augusto Pinochet, and unleashed years of vicious repression. Almost five decades later, a Canadian filmmaker travels to Valparaiso, Chile, to make a film about Beethoven's only opera Fidelio. The opera is about the political prisoner Florestan, who is unjustly held in a dungeon, but is eventually rescued by his wife Leonore.
Kerry Candaele's swirling, poetic, and deeply musical narrative documentary weaves together Beethoven’s operatic masterpiece with the parallel story of the imprisoned Florestan and the murdered Chilean composer/conductor Jorge Peña Hen during Pinochet's dictatorship.
The story, set in the city of Valparaiso, follows his surviving family, Pen's Butoh dancer granddaughter who intends to resurrect him in her art, and the staging of Fidelio with young musicians and singers, and the renowned folk group Napalé. What one reviewer calls "a fascinating and beautiful work", is staged on "prison hill" in an abandoned horse barn.
Love & Justice is magical, painful, but ultimately humane and hopeful, a film for our troubled times. It also thematises Ludwig van Beethoven's own search for love and justice.
